Effects of Prolotherapy

– Ways by which prolotherapy benefits the health.

– The advantages of prolotherapy.

Prolotherapy is a word that might seem strange to a lot of people. The effects of prolotherapy are as real as anything we can think of.

This form of therapy has been in existence for ages. It was an innovation of an Osteopathic physician and surgeon, Dr. Earl Gedney.

The positive effects of prolotherapy are seen in pain management and treatment of numerous conditions, including joint pains and other spinal conditions.

A theory behind prolotherapy is that back pain is the activation of pain receptors in tendon or ligament tissues, which are sensitive to stretching, pressure, etc.

It is also the injection of an irritant solution or irritating solutions (often a form of sugar called dextrose) into joints, ligaments, and tendons.

These irritating solutions are to stimulate the repair of the distended connective tissue.

Prolotherapy is a method of treatment that was designed with the aim of stimulating healing, it is often done in form of injection treatment.

Also, some people (doctors) refer to prolotherapy as sclerosant therapy.

Basically, this type of treatment involves the injection of an irritant solution into a joint space. Doctors also use it in treating weakened ligament and to relieve pain.

The basic components of Prolotherapy include; hyperosmolar dextrose; a sugar solution, glycerine, lidocaine; a local anesthetic, phenol, and sodium.

This form of therapy is one we can administer at joints or tendons where bones connect.

Often, doctors use this form of therapy to treat tissue injuries and some other pains that associate with joints.

Also, it is effective in treating weakened tissues, tears, back pain, etc.

The positive effects of prolotherapy are also evident in treating many musculoskeletal conditions.

Examples of musculoskeletal conditions are ankle pain, joint laxity, tendinopathies, shoulder pain, ligament sprains, back and neck pain, tennis/golfers elbow, instability, plantar fasciitis, and knee pain.

This therapy is also common among US surgeons. Many surgeons are also of the opinion that injecting dextrose at certain concentrations triggers a natural healing process.

It also stimulates the repair of damaged tissues.
