Blepharitis is a condition that refers to the inflammation of the eyelids. The eyelids serve as the protective layer of the eyes, so they serve an important function.
This condition often makes one feel very uncomfortable. Also, this condition often occurs when the tiny oil glands that are close to the base of the eyelashes become clogged. This means that there is a blockage or an obstruction in these tiny oil glands that are close to the eyelashes.
However, it is obvious that this condition does not just occur out of the blues, there are diverse risk factors for blepharitis.
But before we talk about the risk factors of blepharitis, it is important to know that there are three main types of blepharitis.
We have the chronic form of blepharitis which also appears in two dimensions; Anterior blepharitis and posterior blepharitis. Also, we have acute blepharitis.
While anterior blepharitis affects the outer side of the eyelids, posterior blepharitis affects the underside of the eyelids.
Blepharitis can affect anyone, it is not limited to a specific group of people. Also, it has no age limit, it can affect children, teenagers, adults and even old people.
Some of the risk factors of blepharitis include the following;
1. When dandruff plagues the eyebrow of a person, this condition has a higher tendency of occurring. The medical term for this is seborrheic dermatitis when it occurs, dandruff will affect the eyelids leading to blepharitis.
2. A blockage or clog in the thin oil glands that are close to the base of the eyelashes can also lead to blepharitis.
3. Also, some people develop this inflammation of the eyelashes as a result of allergic reactions.
4. Another risk factor for blepharitis is a bacterial infection in the eyes, on the eyebrows or even on the eyelashes.
Although, it might be difficult to treat this condition on your own consulting a medical doctor is the best way to combat this disease.
