There are many reasons that make people have a runny nose, it is a condition of discharge of mucus from the nose and it is common with colds.
It is also the result of excess nasal mucus production which leads to watery nasal secretions that discharge from the nostrils or drip down into the throat. It is also the production of either fluid or thick excess drainage by the nasal cavity.
The medical term some doctors give it is rhinorrhea or rhinitis. Rhino means nose in Greek while ‘rrhea’ is a term that we can use to qualify flow or discharge.
When you have a runny nose, you fell that your nose is stuffy because of the blockage that might accompany a runny nose. It is also burdensome and annoying.
Major causes of a runny nose are:
- Cold and flu.
- Allergies.
- Changes in season and temperature.
- Air pollution
- Stress
- Nasal irritants, clogging etc.
It is important to note that the cause of a runny nose will determine what will be the effective treatment for it.
Steps to take in order to get rid of a runny nose include;
- Clean your nose regularly and blow your nose, clean it with tissue, do not leave the mucus in the nose.
- Take a lot of fluid.
Drinking fluids allow the mucus in your nose to drain faster. However, you must take fluids in their hot forms, take hot tea, hot coffee, etc.
- Have adequate rest
Proper rest also aids quick recovery from a runny nose especially, if stress is the cause of a runny nose.
- Take over the counter medicine.
- Bathe with warm water.
Hot shower is also an effective means to combat a runny nose.
- Inhale steam to avoid cold or take decongestants.
When in the bathroom, you can breathe in steam to make a runny nose stop.
