Gout is a disease that causes painful swelling in the joints, especially the toes, knees, and fingers. It is also a type of arthritis that is characterized by painful, stiff and inflamed joints.
Little can be done to stop a gout attack once it has started but there are still some basic treatments that can be of help in the reduction of pain and swelling.
A gout attack often occurs when an individual has a high level of uric acid in his blood, this condition is hyperuricemia.
However, a high uric acid level is connected to certain health conditions such as; high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, high cholesterol, and heart disease.
Another cause of gout attack that is often noticeable is high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and this is present in many foods.
The result of excess uric is stiffness, swelling, and a painful gout flare.
Consumption of alcohol, excess stress and taking certain medications can also lead to a rise in the uric acid level and this will make an individual prone to a gout attack.
Some ways to curb a gout attack include;
1. Beware of alcohol.
Since we already know that taking alcohol can lead to high uric acid, then, it is wise to stay off alcohol. Alcohol inhibits the excretion of uric acid from your body, avoid it.
2. Be stress-free.
Stress can aggravate gout attack, stay away from stress and the known stressors. Take time to chill out and relax to relieve yourself of stress.
3. Apply ice
Applying ice on the painful joint also relieves you of the inflammation and pain.
4. Take medication
As soon as you notice any swelling on any of your joints, you can take an anti-inflammatory medication to suppress the swelling.
5. Consult the doctor.
