While medications can help lower your blood pressure, you could experience some side effects, including leg cramps, insomnia, and dizziness. Fortunately for you, there are natural methods that you can turn to in order to prevent another hypertension attack.

1. Walking – One of the easiest ways to treat hypertension is to become active. You don’t have to exercise like you’re training for the Olympics. Simple walking can help prevent instances of high blood pressure. Walking at a brisk pace can lower your BP because it aids your heart in using oxygen, allowing the heart to rest and not pump as hard as the normal rate. Walk for at least 30 minutes every day for one week and you will see the difference.

2. Breathing Exercises – You’ve probably heard about yoga, tai chi, and qigong, which are meditative practices that promote slow breathing. Whenever you breathe deeply, you get to decrease stress hormones. Note that when the stress hormones are in elevated levels, a kidney enzyme known as renin increases as well. As a result, you suffer from high blood pressure. Easy breathing exercises should be done at least five minutes in the morning and once again at night.

3. Consume Potassium – Potatoes, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, bananas, honeydew melon, peas, kidney beans, and other sources of potassium can help relieve you from hypertension. It is recommended that you eat foods that are high in potassium and be able to reach at least 2,000 milligrams of the mineral every day.

4. Avoid Salt – Excessive consumption of sodium is one of the leading causes of high blood pressure, especially for those who have a family history of the disease. These people are said to be more sodium-sensitive than others. As much as possible, don’t add salt to your food. If this is not possible for you, cut down your salt consumption to at least half or 1,500 milligrams a day.

Those who have high blood pressure are urged to lose or at least maintain a weight. The more weight you lose, the easier it becomes to lower your blood pressure naturally.
