Dating your friend’s ex…

Dating someone that your friend has been involved with is a really tricky thing. Most people swear that they just would not do it but if you’ve been around for a little while, you’ll know we humans don’t always do it like we say it.

Life happens, love happens and sometimes, people find themselves in situations that they never would have imagined. Like falling for a friend’s ex?

If you find yourself in such a sticky bind, these rules will come in handy to guide you;

DISCLOSE AT THE RIGHT TIME.

Don’t keep such information a secret, let your friend know that you’re trying to hook up with her or his ex. And if its the love interest who’s not really in the know, let the know how close your friendship to their ex is. Don’t spring unnecessary surprises, however, the timing of your disclosure is key. You may have to determine this based on your personal judgement of the situation.

ACCEPT THE NEW BOUNDARIES THAT YOUR NEW RELATIONSHIP WILL CREATE

You can’t eat your cake and have it, you dating your friend’s ex will change your friendship in some ways. For instance, you’ll probably need to slow down on telling the friend in question about your romantic relationship no matter how close you both were before.

You’ll probably need to keep your dishing down to basic stuff and if your friend’s having none of it you may need to shut down on talking about your guy (or girl) when your friend is present. It could go the same way with your new lover and you will need to respect that too. It’s the price you have to pay.

DON’T TRY TO FORCE ANY INTERACTIONS

Don’t try to force them to get along or hang out together. If it happens, it has to happen on their own terms and if you love and respect both of them, you won’t try to force it.

DON’T BADMOUTH EITHER ONE TO THE OTHER

If their relationship didn’t end amicably, this could really be tempting because you’ll know you’re likely to get a sympathetic ear from either one of them when you complain about the other. To maintain a healthy relationship with both of them, your boyfriend or girlfriend is not the person to complain about your friend to and vice versa. Please take all your complaints to a neutral party
