Gingivitis; Causes And Symptoms

– The causes of gingivitis and the symptoms.

– How can one treat this condition when it occurs?

Gingivitis refers to the inflammation of gingivae. The gingiva is the gum consisting of the tissue surrounding the roots of the teeth. So, one can refer to it as the inflammation of the gum.

The gum is the flesh that surrounds the teeth and any inflammation that affects the gum will also have an impact on the teeth.

Also, gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease which is usually caused by the buildup of plaque, a naturally occurring biofilm containing bacteria, on the tissues that surround the teeth.

The inflammation or the swelling of the gum is as a result of the buildup of plaque. A plaque is an accumulation of biofilm ( a thin film of mucus) or bacteria on the teeth.

When this naturally occurring sticky film that contains bacteria builds up on the teeth and gums, irritation occurs, thereby leading to an inflammation of the gum.

However, a proper and prompt dental care can help to reverse the inflammation of the gum.

There are some risk factors or causes of gingivitis, they include the following;

1. A poor dental care and bad oral habits, for instance, when you do not brush your teeth thoroughly, it can cause your gum to inflame.
2. Inadequate flossing of the teeth can also cause it.

4. The consumption of certain medications or drugs can also cause it.
5. Improper fitting of dental appliances.
6. Pregnancy.
7. Diabetes.
8. Genetic factors and hormonal changes can also cause it.

The symptoms of gingivitis include the following;

  • The inflammation and swelling of the gum.
  • The gum will turn red or puffy.
  • Bleeding in the gum can also occur.
  • A bad breath can also result from this condition.

If you do not treat this condition in a good time, it can lead to a severe gum disease, it can also weaken the bone supporting the teeth.

Practise a good dental or oral care, brush your teeth twice a day to help remove the bacterial plaque from your teeth. Also, use an anti-gingivitis or anti-plaque toothpaste containing fluoride to strengthen teeth and prevent plaque buildup.
