Raw Shellfish
Majority of seafood borne illness are usually caused by undercooked shellfish, which can include oysters, clams, and mussels. When we cook, it helps to prevent some types of infection, but it does not prevent the algae-related infections that are associated with red tides. Raw shellfish pose a concern for everybody, and they should be avoided altogether during pregnancy.
Soft Cheeses
Did you know that imported soft cheeses may contain listeria. You need to avoid soft cheeses such as brie, Camembert, Roquefort, feta, Gorgonzola, and Mexican style cheeses that include queso blanco and queso fresco, unless clearly stated by specialist that they are made from pasteurized milk. Soft non-imported cheeses made with pasteurized milk are very safe to consume.
Pate
Meat or refrigerated pate spreads should be avoided because they may contain the bacteria listeria. Canned pate or shelf-safe meat spreads can be eaten.
Unwashed Vegetables
Yes, vegetables are safe, and necessary part of a balanced diet. It is however essential to make sure they are washed to avoid unnecessary exposure to toxoplasmosis. This may contaminate the soil where the vegetables were grown.
